Dear Resident,
Operation AVRO – Leigh Town Centre
On Thursday 21st May 2026, Leigh Town Centre hosted Greater Manchester Police’s Operation AVRO.
Operation AVRO is a GMP initiative aimed at tackling local crime issues through targeted, high-visibility activity. The operation runs on a monthly basis across different districts, deploying additional resources and specialist officers to address offences such as drug dealing and anti-social behaviour. As part of this year’s operation, GMP’s Facial Recognition Van was also utilised.
The day proved successful, with several arrests made.
Acting on previous intelligence referring to drug dealing from a vehicle, officers stop-searched a 48-year-old male in the town centre, who was found to be in possession of a Class A drug. As the male had driven into the area earlier that day, officers located and searched his vehicle. This search uncovered a bladed article and an improvised offensive weapon.
The male was subsequently arrested for possession of a Class A drug, possession of an offensive weapon and Possession of a Bladed Article.
The Motability vehicle was also seized and is unlikely to be returned.
Overall, the operation was a positive and proactive day for policing in Leigh, contributing to the safety and reassurance of the local community.
It was a nice car too! Have a great Bank Holiday Weekend, and enjoy the Sunshine at last!!! | ||
